Summary

John Hunter and the Mayan Gods doesn’t provide anything new in terms of gameplay which you can’t see in other slots. However, the upgrading symbol bonus round still ticks the right boxes and can provide for a really enjoyable free spins feature. The high volatility is capable of delivering some nice big payouts and the max win is more realistically attainable than often displayed by Pragmatic Play slots.

John Hunter and the Mayan Gods is a highly volatile slot with a max win potential of 2,500x. The spins range in value from 0.1 coins up to 100 coins and you have 10 fixed paylines to form your wins on. The RTP is 96.51% which is fairly decent for slots being produced in 2020.

Expanding Wild Symbols

There is a Golden Mayan mask which acts as the Wild symbol. During the base game if you land this as part of a winning combination the Wild will expand to cover the entire reel. These Wild symbols only land on reels 2, 3 and 4. However, you can land all 3 at one.

Free Spins Bonus

Land 3, 4 or 5 Scatter symbols for a 2x, 20x or 50x payout along with 12 free spins. During the free spins you will find that every time a Wild symbol lands it will expand and will upgrade the lowest premium symbols to all be the next highest premium symbol. This works until you have landed up to 5 Wilds during the free spins to unlock all the lower paying premium symbols to be upgraded to John Hunter symbols which are the highest paying, meaning that your chances of scoring some mega wins go up drastically.

Each time you land a Wild symbol it will add one extra free spin and upgrade the symbol one level. If you land 2 Wilds on the same spin you get 3 extra free spins and 2 symbol upgrades, 3 Wilds gives 5 extra free spins and 3 symbols upgrades. The free spins can continue to be added with new Wilds spinning in until you hit the max win of 2,500x.

Graphics

John Hunter and the Mayan Gods is set on the background of a jungle with some Mayan style buildings. The reels are set upon some brickwork and framed with some intricate looking masonry typical of the Mayan style. When you get to the free spins round you’ll be taken inside a temple with some blazing fires lighting the way to either side.

Lower paying symbols include Jack, Queen, King and Ace, with Aces paying 10x for 5 of a kind.

Premium symbols start with a green and gold goblet, a dagger, a ring with pink gemstone, a dragons head (perhaps  Quetzalcoatl), a Mayan Chief with colourful headdress and then John Hunter as the top paying symbol. He’ll give you 50x for 5 of a kind.

The Wild symbols are golden Mayan masks and sub for all symbols but not the Scatters which are represented by a Mayan Temple.
